Are you a keen angler looking to holiday in a tropical destination? With abundant fish in both freshwater and saltwater bodies, Costa Rica is for you! At Marina Charters, we arrange Costa Rica sport fishing tours with great fishing charter fleets. Get ready to haul in some Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, and Roosterfish, to name a few.

What species of fish can you catch in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is a haven for angling enthusiasts, boasting some of the most exotic species in the world. The species of fish you can catch will largely depend on where you decide to go fishing. In the Pacific side of the Costa Rican coast, you can find species such as Dorado Wahoo, sailfish, snapper, marlin, Roosterfish, and Tuna.

In the Caribbean side of the coast, you’ll find ones like the Big Tarpon and Big Snook. Want to catch some mighty Rainbow Bass (Guapote)? Lake Arenal is where you need to head.

Blue and Black Marlin are prize-catches as they can reach up to 600 pounds and are quite powerful. Mahi Mahi (Dorado) are also sought after because they are extremely fast, reaching up to 50 mph. Another delicious but challenging catch is the Yellowfish Tuna that can reach up to 300 lbs.

When to go fishing in Costa Rica?

In general, you can go Costa Rica sport fishing all-year around, but some months are better for catching certain species of fish. If you’re looking to catch Marlin, December to April are great months where April and May are great for Black Marlin. If you’re eyeing some sailfish, December to March are the best months where February is the peak month.

Late May to November are the best months for catching Dorado (Mahi Mahi) while January to July are the ideal months for catching Yellowfish Tuna. November to March and July to December are the best months for inshore fish such as Roosterfish and Snapper respectively. You can catch Wahoo fish all year-around with the highest density found between May to August.

For species like Tarpon, Machaca, and Rainbow Bass (Guapote), fishing is good all-year-around as well. The Costa Rica high season for fishing is generally between December and April, during which there are strong ocean currents that push oxygen-rich water towards the coast.

What are some of the best spots to go fishing in Costa Rica?

Again, this widely varies depending on what species you want to catch. We generally depart for our fishing tours from Marina Papagayo. As for the best fishing spot, Costa Rican fishing is synonymous with a place called Los Suenos where you will find most of the species listed above.

For sport fishing, Quepos and Tamarindo are renowned in Costa Rica. Quepos, for example, is known as the sailfish capital of the world.

Costa Rica is a paradise for the avid angler, boasting countless exotic species. If you’re looking to try some Costa Rica sport fishing, Marina Charters arranges some great fishing trips starting from Marina Papagayo.
